Fungi can produce an attack on living plants and trees, as well as dead wood. Certain species such as brackets and stump-rotting gilled fungi conduct an important task in converting dead trees into humus, which can be reutilized by other plants.

Other types of fungi – Amanita, Russula and Boletus for examples, conduct a mycorrhizal relationship with trees. This is defined by a co-operation between the tree's root system and the mushroom, with an exchange of nutrients such that each one benefits from the other.

Many fungi establish symbiotic relationships with conifer and broadleaf trees. Too bad that in the end the fungus kills the tree.
