The polysaccharides obtained from the mycelial culture of the mushroom and thereafter administered intraperitoneally at a set dose of 300mg fully reduced the growth of both Sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich solid cancer cells.

Who discovered that these mushrooms can cure cancer and what are the secondary effects of this tretment?

Axelsson and Björndal studied the polysaccharide fraction from the hot water extract of Albatrellus ovinus in 1969. They revealed the fucogalactan structure. Ohtsuka et alll proved the inhibitory effect on tumour cells, in 1973.

Grifolin has been shown to strongly inhibit the growth of the various cancer cell lines below (Ye et al., 2005):

CNE1 (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma)
HeLa (human cervical cancer)
MCF7 (human breast cancer)
SW480 (human colon cancer)
K562 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia)
Raji (human Burkitts Lymphoma)
B95-8 (marmoset B lymphoblastoid)

Grifolin is a potential antitumor natural product and there are no side effects of the treatment. Unfortunatelly it is not used very often.

Grifolin and neogrifolin  may be useful for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Grifolin seems to act upon cholesterol metabolism, too. When added to a high cholesterol diet fed to rats was found to significantly lower plasma cholesterol levels, with limited or no toxicity. Grifolin may be an attractive pharmacological target for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
