Scientists estimated the number of fungi species at approximately 1.5 million, whilst the plant kingdom counts 250,000 species of flowering plants. Mycologists believe that only about 5% of this number (80,000 species) has been properly documented. So far there have been identified 28,700 macrofungi (fruitbody-forming), 24,000 rust, smuts and molds, and 13,500 lichens.
Many of the undescovered species are thought to inhabit the tropical forests.
