Fungi occur throughout the world. There are widespread species, occuring in Europe, Asia and North America, and species restricted to a single continent.

The many varieties of woodland support different types of fungal life. For instance, alkaline loam tends to contain non-mycorrhizal  species as Lepiota procera. Acidic soil, with beech or birch trees, supports many mycorrhizal fungi - boletes, trichs, russulas. Sandy pine woods are suitable for many boletes and russulas. Fistulina species occur with oak trees.

In grassland mushrooms may be directly associated with the grass or other plants. They also may be dung-fungi, living on the droppings of animals that graze there. For instance, fertilized pasture is a suitable habitat for Agaricus, Coprinus and Panaeolus species.
