Mushrooms are toxic on different levels; it can involve antibiotic or antiviral effects, and also mind-changing or bioluminescent in nature. Certain chemical contents can cause the mushroom diner to vomit the meal after consumption, and this is caused by the defense mechanism released by the mushroom as it is being digested in our system.

12.   Puffball mushrooms of the species Lycoperdon perlatum have been known to cause respiratory sicknesses via inhalation. In an investigation conducted in 1994, a patient who had to undergo a histopathologic examination of lung biopsy produced results which indicated an inflammation of the lungs, as well as the presence of yeast-like structures similar to that of L.perlatum spores.

The fungal chemical compounds are a bit different from those found in plant or animal cells, including human cells. We can expect health problems if we consume large amounts of mushrooms. I don't refer now to the well-known poisonous species that people avoid to eat. I mean the edible ones. Some of the chemicals they contain become poisonous when combined with alcohol. One can get nausea, vomiting and heart symptoms under such circumstances. I  believe mushrooms contain many chemicals that can interact with other substances (not just alcohol) and affect the enzymes in our organism.
